The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no day on which the servants rise in the morning except that two angels descend. One of them says, 'O Allah, grant the one who spends a replacement,' and the other says, 'O Allah, grant the one who withholds destruction.'"
قال رسول الله ﷺ: ما من يوم يصبح العباد فيه إلا ملكان ينزلان، فيقول أحدهما: اللهم أعط منفقا خلفا. ويقول الآخر: اللهم أعط ممسكا تلفا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1442), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (1010), both through the route of Sulayman bin Bilal, who said, Muawiya bin Abu Muzarrid narrated to me, from Abu Hubab Saeed bin Yasar, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. Their wording is identical.His saying, "a substitute," means a compensation, whether he spent it on obligatory matters or on voluntary ones. His saying, "and give destruction to one who withholds," means, destroy what he withheld. This supplication applies to one who refrains from obligatory spending, and it does not include voluntary spending, because one who refrains from voluntary spending is not prayed against.
