He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The example of the miser and the generous spender is like two men wearing iron cloaks reaching from their chests to their collarbones. As for the generous spender, whenever he spends, the cloak expands over his skin until it covers his fingertips and erases his footprints. As for the miser, whenever he tries to spend anything, every ring of the cloak clings to its place. He tries to stretch it, but it will not expand."
أنه سمع رسول الله ﷺ يقول: مثل البخيل والمنفق كمثل رجلين، عليهما جبتان من حديد من ثديهما إلى تراقيهما، فأما المنفق فلا ينفق إلا سبغت- أو وفرت- على جلده حتى تخفي بنانه وتعفو أثره، وأما البخيل فلا يريد أن ينفق شيئا إلا لزقت كل حلقة مكانها، فهو يوسعها ولا تتسع.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1443), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (1021), both through Abu Zinad, that Abdul-Rahman told him, that he heard Abu Hurairah say it, as mentioned. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is similar.
