There were people in Mecca who had embraced Islam but kept their faith hidden. When the polytheists set out for Badr, they forced these people to go with them, and some of them were killed at Badr while fighting alongside the polytheists. The Muslims said, "These were our companions, Muslims who were taken out against their will," and they sought forgiveness for them. Then this verse was revealed, "Indeed, those whom the angels take in death while wronging themselves, the angels will ask, 'In what condition were you?' They will reply, 'We were oppressed in the land.' The angels will say, 'Was the earth of Allah not spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?' For these, their refuge is Hell, and an evil destination it is." [Nisa 4:97]The Muslims wrote to those who remained in Mecca about this verse, so they set out. But when they had traveled part of the way, the polytheists came to know of their departure, caught up with them, and brought them back. They returned with them. Then this verse was revealed, "And among the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah,' but when one of them is harmed for the sake of Allah, he regards the persecution of people as the punishment of Allah. And if victory comes from your Lord, they will surely say, 'Indeed, we were with you.' Is not Allah most knowing of what is in the hearts of all creatures?" [Ankabut 29:10]The Muslims wrote to them about this, and they grieved. Then this verse was revealed, "Then indeed your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been compelled and then fought and were patient, indeed your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and Merciful."So they wrote to them about this.
