The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in the courtyard of his house in Makkah when Uthman bin Mazun passed by and smiled at him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Won't you sit down?""Certainly," he replied. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat facing him. While he was talking with him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ suddenly fixed his gaze upward at the sky. He looked at the sky for a while, then began to lower his gaze until it settled on the ground to his right. He turned away from his companion Uthman toward the place where his gaze had settled, and he began to nod his head as though he were trying to grasp what was being said to him, while Ibn Mazun watched. When the matter was finished and he had understood what was being said to him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fixed his gaze upward at the sky again as he had the first time, and followed it with his eyes until it disappeared into the sky. Then he turned back to Uthman, sitting as he had been at first.Uthman said, "Muhammad, in all the time I have sat with you and come to you, I have never seen you do anything like what you did this morning.""And what did you see me do?" he asked.Uthman said, "I saw you fix your gaze on the sky, then lower it to your right, and you turned toward it and left me, and you began to nod your head as though you were trying to grasp something being said to you.""You noticed that?" he asked."Yes," said Uthman. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A messenger of Allah came to me just now, while you were sitting here.""A messenger of Allah?" Uthman asked."Yes," he replied."And what did he say to you?"He said, "Allah commands justice, kindness, and giving to relatives, and He forbids indecency, wrongdoing, and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed." [Nahl 16:90]Uthman said, "That was the moment faith settled in my heart, and I came to love Muhammad."
Ahmad (2919), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (893), and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (9/27–28) all narrated it from the hadith of Abdul-Hameed bin Bahram, who said, Shahr bin Hawshab told us, Abdullah bin Abbas told us, and he mentioned it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Shahr bin Hawshab, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan when he does not bring something that is objected to.Ibn Kathir said in his Tafsir (4/597), "Its chain of transmission is good, connected, and hasan."
