The mockers were Walid bin Mughira, Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth, Aswad bin Muttalib (Abu Zamaa, of Banu Asad bin Abdul Uzza), Harith bin Ghaytal as-Sahmi, and As bin Waail as-Sahmi. Jibreel came to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complained to him about them.Jibreel showed him Abu Amr Walid bin Mughira and gestured toward his median vein.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have not done anything."Jibreel replied, "I have taken care of him for you."Then he showed him Harith bin Ghaytal as-Sahmi and gestured toward his belly.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have not done anything."Jibreel replied, "I have taken care of him for you."Then he showed him As bin Waail as-Sahmi and gestured toward the sole of his foot.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have not done anything."Jibreel replied, "I have taken care of him for you."As for Walid bin Mughira, he passed by a man from Khuza who was feathering an arrow, and the arrow struck his median vein and severed it.As for Aswad bin Muttalib, he went blind. Some say he simply lost his sight, while others say he sat down beneath a tree and began calling out, "My sons, will you not defend me? I am perishing. Thorns are stabbing my eyes."They kept saying, "We do not see anything," and he continued in that state until both his eyes were blinded.As for Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth, sores broke out on his head and he died from them.As for Harith bin Ghaytal, jaundice afflicted him in his belly until his excrement came out from his mouth, and he died from it.As for As bin Waail, while he was going about one day, a sharp thorn pierced his foot and filled it, and he died.
في قوله تعالى: {إنا كفيناك المستهزئين}
{المستهزئين}: الوليد بن المغيرة، والأسود بن عبد يغوث، والسود بن المطلب أبو زمعة من بني أسد بن عبد العزي، والحارث بن غيطل السهمي، والعاص بن وائل السهمي، فأتاه جبريل عليه السلام، فشكاهم إليه رسول الله ﷺ، فأراه أبا عمرو الوليد بن المغيرة، فأومأ جبريل إلى أكحله، فقال: ما صنعت شيئا. فقال: كفيتكه. ثم أراه الحارث بن غيطل السهمي، فأومأ إلى بطنه، فقال: ما صنعت شيئا. فقال: كفيتكه. ثم أراه العاص بن وائل السهمي، فأومأ إلى أخمصه، فقال: ما صنعت شيئا. فقال: كفيتكه. فأما الوليد بن المغيرة فمر برجل من خزاعة، وهو يريش نبلا له، فأصاب أكحله، فقطعها. وأما الأسود بن المطلب، فعمي فمنهم من يقول عمي كذا، ومنهم من يقول: نزل تحت شجرة، فجعل يقول: يا بني، ألا تدفعون عني، قد هلكت أطعن بشوك في عيني، فجعلوا يقولون: ما نرى شيئا، فلم يزل كذلك حتى عميت عيناه. وأما الأسود بن عبد يغوث، فخرج في رأسه قروح، فمات منها. وأما الحارث بن غيطل، فأخذه الماء الأصفر في بطنه حتى خرج خروؤه من فيه، فمات منها. وأما العاص بن وائل، فبينما هو كذلك يوما حتى دخل في رجله شبرقة حتى امتلأت منها، فمات.
Reported by Tabarani in Al-Awsat (5/515–517), Bayhaqi in Al-Dalail (2/316–318), and Maqdisi in Al-Mukhtarah (10/96–98), all of them from the hadith of Sufyan bin Husayn, from Jafar bin Iyas, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who related it.Its chain is hasan on account of Sufyan bin Husayn, for his narrations are graded hasan when not from Zuhri.
