Some people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about soothsayers.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "They are nothing."They said, "Messenger of Allah, sometimes they tell of something that turns out to be true."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "That is a word from the jinn which a jinni snatches and clucks into the ear of his human ally like the clucking of a hen, then they mix it with more than a hundred lies."
سأل أناس رسول الله ﷺ عن الكهان؟ فقال لهم رسول الله ﷺ: ليسوا بشيء. قالوا: يا رسول الله، فإنهم يحدثون أحيانا الشيء يكون حقا، قال رسول الله ﷺ: تلك الكلمة من الجن يخطفها الجني، فيقرها في أذن وليه قر الدجاجة، فيخلطون فيها أكثر من مائة كذبة.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Monotheism (7561), and Muslim in the Book of Greetings (2228:123), both through the chain of Zuhri, "Yahya bin Urwa told me that he heard Urwa say, Ayesha said," then he related it. The wording given here is Muslim's.In Bukhari's wording, "He pours it into the ear of his ally, like the clucking of a hen."His saying, "They are nothing," means that the speech of soothsayers has nothing to do with sound knowledge.His saying, "qarr," it is said, "qarra qariran," meaning he made a similar sound, which is the repetition of speech into the ear of the listener until he understands it.Ibn Qutayba said in Tawil Mushkil Quran, "Stoning [of the jinn] existed before his being sent as a prophet ﷺ, but it was not as intense in guarding the heavens as it became after he was sent."
