Salih bin Abu Tareef reported,

I asked Abu Saeed Khudri, "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say anything about this verse, 'Perhaps those who disbelieved will wish that they had been Muslims' [Hijr 15:2]?"He replied, "Yes. I heard him say, 'Allah will bring some people out of the Fire after He has taken His retribution from them.'"He continued, "When Allah puts them into the Fire along with the idolaters, the idolaters will say, 'Did you not claim in the world that you were the friends of Allah? So what are you doing here in the Fire with us?' When Allah hears this from them, He grants permission for intercession, and the angels and the prophets intercede for them until they come out by Allah's leave. Once they have been brought out, the idolaters say, 'If only we had been like them, so that intercession would reach us and we too could come out of the Fire.' That is the meaning of the words of Allah جل وعلا, 'Perhaps those who disbelieved will wish that they had been Muslims' [Hijr 15:2]."In Paradise they will be called the people of Hell because of a blackness on their faces, so they will say, 'Our Lord, take this name away from us.' Then He will command them, and they will wash themselves in a river of Paradise, and it will leave them."
