Urwa bin Zubayr reported,

Ayesha was asked about the saying of Allah the Exalted, "Until when the messengers despaired" [Yusuf 12:110].The questioner said, "I asked her, 'Is it kuzzibu (they were disbelieved) or kuzibu (they were lied to)?'"Ayesha replied, "Kuzzibu, they were disbelieved."He said, "But then they would have been certain that their people had disbelieved them, so it would not be a matter of supposition."She said, "Yes indeed. By my life, they were certain of that."I said to her, "Then what about 'and they thought that they had been lied to'?"She said, "Allah forbid! The messengers would never think such a thing of their Lord."I asked, "Then what does this verse mean?"She said, "They are the followers of the messengers, those who believed in their Lord and accepted them as truthful. The trial dragged on for them, and victory was delayed, until the messengers despaired of those among their people who had disbelieved them, and the messengers came to think that even their followers had now disbelieved them. At that point, the help of Allah came to them."
