Kaab reported,

Mukhashshi bin Humayyir said, "I would gladly accept that each one of us be struck a hundred lashes if only we could be spared having Quran revealed about us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to Ammar bin Yasir, "Catch up with these people, for they have been consumed. Ask them about what they said. If they deny it and try to conceal it, then say to them, 'No, you did indeed say such and such.'"So Ammar caught up with them and conveyed to them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered. They came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering excuses.Mukhashshi bin Humayyir said, "Messenger of Allah, my name and my father's name held me back."So Allah the Exalted revealed concerning them, "Make no excuse. You have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one group of you, We will punish another group" [Tawbah 9:66].The one whom Allah pardoned was Mukhashshi bin Humayyir, who was then renamed Abd al-Rahman. He asked Allah to grant him martyrdom in such a way that no one would know of his death. He was killed on the Day of Yamamah, and no one knew of his death, nor who killed him, nor was any trace or sign of him ever found.

His saying, "And if you ask them, they will surely say, 'We were only conversing and playing.' Say, 'Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?' Make no excuse, you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon a group of you, We will punish another group because they were criminals"
