During the expedition of Tabuk, a man said in a gathering, "We have never seen anyone like these reciters of ours, more gluttonous, more lying in tongue, or more cowardly when meeting the enemy."A man in the gathering replied, "You have lied, rather you are a hypocrite! I will surely inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The news reached the Prophet ﷺ, and the Quran was revealed concerning it.Abdullah bin Umar said, "I saw him clinging to the saddle-strap of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ she-camel, with the stones striking him, while he was saying, 'Messenger of Allah, "we were only chatting and jesting",' and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was reciting, "Was it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuse, you have disbelieved after your belief" [Tawbah 9:65–66]."
قال رجل في غزوة تبوك في مجلس: ما رأينا مثل قرائنا هؤلاء، أرغب بطونا، ولا أكذب ألسنا، ولا أجبن عند اللقاء. فقال رجل في المجلس: كذبت، ولكنك منافق! لأخبرن رسول الله ﷺ، فبلغ ذلك النبي ﷺ، ونزل القرآن. قال عبد الله بن عمر: فأنا رأيته متعلقا بحقب ناقة رسول الله ﷺ تنكبه الحجارة وهو يقول: يا رسول الله {إنما كنا نخوض ونلعب} ورسول الله ﷺ يقول: {أبالله وآياته ورسوله كنتم تستهزئون لا تعتذروا قد كفرتم بعد إيمانكم}
Ibn Jareer narrated it in his Tafsir (11/543-544), and Ibn Abu Hatim narrated it in his Tafsir (6/1829-1830), both of them from Yunus bin Abdul-Ala, who said, Abdullah bin Wahb told us, who said, Hisham bin Saad narrated to me, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Abdullah bin Umar, and he related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Hisham bin Saad, for his hadith is hasan.
