Ali sent a piece of gold still embedded in its ore from Yemen to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who divided it among four men, Aqra bin Habis al-Hanzali, Uyayna bin Badr al-Fazari, Alqama bin Ulatha al-Amiri from the clan of Banu Kilab, and Zayd al-Khayr al-Tai from the clan of Banu Nabhan. The Quraysh became angry and said, "You give it to the chiefs of Najd and leave us out?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I did so only to win their hearts."Then a man with a thick beard, prominent cheekbones, sunken eyes, a protruding forehead, and a shaved head came forward and said, "Fear Allah, Muhammad."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded, "Who will obey Allah if I disobey Him? He entrusts me with the people of the earth, yet you do not trust me?"The man then turned to leave, and one of the people present, said to be Khalid bin Walid, asked permission to kill him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "From this man's stock will come a people who recite the Quran, but it will not pass beyond their throats. They will kill the people of Islam and spare the idolaters. They will pass through Islam as an arrow passes clean through its prey. If I were to live to see them, I would surely slaughter them as the people of Aad were slaughtered."
Bukhari narrated it in the Tafsir (4667), and Muslim in the Zakat (1064), both of them by way of Saeed bin Masruq, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Naim, from Abu Saeed Khudri, who said, and then he mentioned it. The wording given is that of Muslim, while Bukhari's wording is abridged. As for His saying, "and for freeing slaves" [Tawbah 9:60], this means giving to a slave under a contract of manumission to help him fulfill his contract, or purchasing a slave and freeing him outright.
