Abu Saeed reported that while the Prophet ﷺ was distributing something, Abdullah bin Dhul-Khuwaysira Tamimi came and said, "Be just, Messenger of Allah."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Woe to you! Who will be just if I am not just?"Umar bin Khattab said, "Let me strike off his neck."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave him. He has companions beside whose prayer any of you would think little of his own prayer, and beside whose fasting any of you would think little of his own fasting. They will pass right through the religion the way an arrow passes through its game. One looks at its feathers and finds nothing on them, looks at its head and finds nothing on it, then looks at the binding and finds nothing on it, then looks at the shaft and finds nothing on it, for the arrow has outstripped the dung and the blood. Their sign is a man with one arm, or he said one breast, like a woman's breast, or he said like a lump of flesh that quivers. They will come out at a time when people are divided."Abu Saeed said, "I bear witness that I heard this from the Prophet ﷺ, and I bear witness that Ali fought and killed them while I was with him. The man was brought exactly matching the description the Prophet ﷺ had given."He said, "Then this verse was revealed concerning him, 'And among them are those who criticize you concerning the charities' [Tawbah 9:58]."
قال بينا النبي ﷺ يقسم، جاء عبد الله بن ذى الخويصرة التميمي، فقال: اعدل يا رسول الله. فقال: ويلك من يعدل إذا لم أعدل. قال عمر بن الخطاب: دعني أضرب عنقه. قال: دعه، فإن له أصحابا يحقر أحدكم صلاته مع صلاته، وصيامه مع صيامه، يمرقون من الدين كما يمرق السهم من الرمية، ينظر في قذذه فلا يوجد فيه شيء، ينظر في نصله فلا يوجد فيه شيء، ثم ينظر في رصافه، فلا يوجد فيه شيء، ثم ينظر في نضيه، فلا يوجد فيه شيء، قد سبق الفرث والدم، آيتهم رجل إحدى يديه- أو قال ثدييه- مثل ثدى المرأة أو قال مثل البضعة تدردر، يخرجون على حين فرقة من الناس. قال أبو سعيد: أشهد سمعت من النبي ﷺ، وأشهد أن عليا قتلهم وأنا معه، جيء بالرجل على النعت الذي نعته النبي ﷺ قال: فنزلت فيه: {ومنهم من يلمزك في الصدقات}
Bukhari narrated it in "The Recantation of Apostates" (6933) via the route of Mamar, from Zuhri, from Abu Salama, from Abu Saeed Khudri, and he related it.Bukhari also narrated it (3610) via the route of Shuayb, and Muslim narrated it in "Zakat" (1064:148) via the route of Yunus, both of them from Zuhri with his chain, and in it appears the wording, "and Dhul-Khuwaysira came to him," meaning the father. Likewise, Uzai and others narrated it from Zuhri and said, "Dhul-Khuwaysira."It appears from this that Mamar alone said, "Abdullah bin Khuwaysira" or "Ibn Dhil-Khuwaysira," while the correct and well-preserved wording is that of the majority. Dhul-Khuwaysira's name was Hurqus bin Zuhayr, as Ibn Abdul-Barr stated in Tamhid (23/332).As for him and others like him among the hypocrites, are they counted among the companions or not? The authors who wrote on the companions differed on this. Ibn Abdul-Barr did not mention them, while Ibn Athir mentioned them among the companions, correcting those before him. Ibn Hajar chose the first view, and it is the sahih one, because it is a condition of companionship that one dies as a Muslim, and these people died in hypocrisy.
