Iblis came on the day of Badr with an army of devils, carrying his banner, in the form of a man from the tribe of Banu Mudlij, while Iblis himself appeared in the form of Suraqa bin Malik bin Jusham. Iblis said to the polytheists, "No one among the people can overcome you today, and I am your protector" [Anfal 8:48].When the two armies lined up against each other, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a handful of dust and threw it into the faces of the polytheists, causing them to turn back in retreat. Jibreel then approached Iblis, and when Iblis saw him, his hand was in the hand of one of the polytheists. Iblis pulled his hand away and fled with his followers. The man said, "Suraqa, do you not claim to be our protector?"He replied, "Indeed, I see what you do not see. Indeed, I fear Allah, and Allah is severe in punishment" [Anfal 8:48]. That was when he saw the angels.

Tabari narrated it in his Tafsir (11/221), Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (5/1715), and Bayhaqi in Dalail (3/78), all of them through the route of Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of Layth, who said, Muawiya bin Salih narrated to me, from Ali bin Abu Talha, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Ali bin Abu Talha. Although he transmits from Ibn Abbas through an intermediary without naming him directly, the intermediary is known and is truthful (saduq).
