The chiefs of Quraysh gathered at the Hijr and made a pact by al-Lat, al-Uzza, Manat the third, Nailah, and Isaf, saying, "If we ever see Muhammad, we will rise against him as one man and not leave him until we have killed him."His daughter Fatimah came weeping until she entered upon the Messenger of Allah and said, "These chiefs of Quraysh have made a pact against you. If they see you, they will rise against you and kill you. Every one of them has assigned himself a share of your blood."He said, "My little daughter, bring me water for ablution."He performed ablution, then went out to them in the mosque. When they saw him, they said, "Here he is!" But their eyes lowered, their chins sank to their chests, and they remained rooted in their seats. Not one of them could lift his gaze to him, and not a single man rose toward him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached until he stood right over their heads. He took a handful of dust and said, "May the faces be disfigured!" Then he flung it at them. Not a man among them was struck by a single pebble of that dust without being killed as a disbeliever on the Day of Badr.
Ahmad (2672) and Ibn Hibban (6502) narrated it, and Hakim (1/163) graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym, for his hadith is hasan.
