Abu Jahl said when the two armies met, "Allah, whichever of us has most severed ties of kinship and brought us something unknown, destroy him this morning." So he was the one who sought judgment.
أن أبا جهل قال حين التقى القوم: اللهم أقطعنا للرحم، وآتانا بما لا يعرف، فأحنه الغداة. فكان المستفتح.
Ahmad narrated it (23661), from Yazid, who said Muhammad - meaning Ibn Ishaq - informed us, who said Zuhri narrated to me, from Abdullah bin Thalaba bin Suayr, and he related it.Muhammad bin Ishaq's hadith is hasan when he states his source explicitly, but in any case Salih bin Kaysan - who is trustworthy and a hafiz - also narrated it from Zuhri in the same way, and through his route Nasai narrated it in al-Kubra (11137), and Hakim (2/328). Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs."Abdullah bin Thalaba was a minor companion, born four years before the Hijrah, though it is also said he was born after the Hijrah. So the hadith is a mursal report of a companion, and it is accepted by the majority of scholars.As for his saying "fa-ahinhu," it comes from "Allah ahanahu," meaning "destroyed him."
