Saad bin Abu Waqqas reported,

I came to the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Badr carrying a sword and said, "Messenger of Allah, Allah has healed my heart today from the enemy, so grant me this sword."He replied, "This sword is neither mine nor yours."So I walked away saying to myself, "Today it will be given to someone who did not endure what I endured!"While I was in that state, the messenger came to me and said, "Answer the call."I thought something had been revealed concerning what I had said. When I came, the Prophet ﷺ said to me, "You asked me for this sword, and it was neither mine nor yours. Now Allah has given it to me, so it is yours."Then he recited, "They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, the spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger" [Anfal 8:1], to the end of the verse.
