No one was more beloved to them than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, yet when they saw him, they would not stand up, because they knew how much he disliked that.
ما كان شخص أحب إليهم من رسول الله ﷺ، وكانوا إذا رأوه لم يقوموا لما يعلمون من كراهيته لذلك.
Tirmidhi (2754), Ahmad (12345), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (946), and Abu Yaala (3784) all narrated it through different chains going back to Hammad bin Salama, from Humayd, from Anas, and he related it. Its chain is sahih. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih gharib hadith from this angle."As for what was narrated from Abu Umama, who said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us leaning on his staff, so we stood up for him, and he said, "Do not stand as the non-Arabs do, honoring one another," this is daif. Abu Dawud (5230) narrated it from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Abdullah bin Numayr told us, from Masaar, from Abu Anbas, from Abu Adbas, from Abu Marzuq, from Abu Ghalib, from Abu Umama, and he related it.Ahmad (22181) narrated it from Abdullah bin Numayr with his chain, and added to it from the supplication, "O Allah, forgive us, have mercy on us, be pleased with us, accept from us, admit us into Paradise, save us from the Fire, and set right all our affairs." It was as though we wished he would add more for us, so he said, "I have gathered the whole matter for you in this."Its chain contains weak men along with confusion. Abu Adbas is unknown, his teacher Abu Marzuq was described by Hafiz as lenient, and his teacher Abu Ghalib was declared daif by Nasai and Ibn Saad, while Abu Hatim said of him, "He is not strong." There is also clear confusion and inconsistency in the chain.Ibn Majah (3836) narrated it from Ali bin Muhammad, who said, Waki told us, from Masaar, from Abu Marzuq, from Abu Adbas, from Abu Umama, and he related it. Mizzi said in Tuhfat Ashraf (4/183), "This is how it appears here, but it is a mistake, and the correct version is the first one," meaning the chain of Abu Dawud. He then said, "In some later manuscripts it appears as from Abu Marzuq, from Abu Waail, from Abu Umama, but this is a mistake made by someone after the author."
