I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever loves that men should stand before him in respect, let him take his seat in the Fire."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من أحب أن يمثل له الرجال قياما فليتبوأ مقعده من النار.
Abu Dawud (5229) and Tirmidhi (2755) both narrated it from the hadith of Habib bin Shaheed, from Abu Majliz, who said, Muawiya came out to Ibn Zubayr and Ibn Amir. Ibn Amir stood up for him, while Ibn Zubayr remained seated. Muawiya said to Ibn Amir, "Sit down, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say," and then he mentioned it.Imam Ahmad (16830), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (977), and Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah (3330) all also narrated it by this route, from the hadith of Shuba, from Habib bin Shaheed, with his chain of transmission, in similar wording. In another version, "Whoever is pleased that people stand up for him has thereby earned the Fire."Bayhaqi narrated it in Madkhal (721), and Khatib in his Tarikh (13/193), both from the hadith of Abbas bin Muhammad Duri, who said, Shababa bin Sawwar told us, Mughira bin Muslim narrated to me, from Abdullah bin Burayda, who said, I heard Muawiya say, and then he mentioned it in similar wording. His word "yastakheem" carries the same meaning.
