Word reached Umar bin Khattab that a certain man had sold wine. He said, "May Allah destroy so-and-so. Does he not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'May Allah destroy the Jews. The fat of animals was made unlawful for them, so they melted it down and sold it.'"
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Sales (2223), and Muslim in the Book of Sharecropping (1582), both through the route of Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, Amr bin Dinar narrated to us, he said, Tawus informed me that he heard Ibn Abbas say what follows. The wording given is Bukhari's, while in Muslim's version it reads, "Umar was informed that Samura had sold wine."His saying, "every animal having claws" [Anam 6:146] refers to those among beasts and birds whose toes are not split, such as camels and ostriches. And His saying, "or the intestines" [Anam 6:146], Ibn Jareer said, "It is a plural, the singular of which is hawiya or hawiyah. It refers to what coils within the belly, gathering together and becoming round. These are the banat al-laban, which are also the mabaair, also called al-marabid, and they contain the intestines." Banat al-laban refers to the smaller parts of the intestines, and mabaair is the plural of mabar, which is the place of dung in any four-legged animal. And His saying, "That was how We recompensed them for their transgression" [Anam 6:146], meaning that this prohibition was because of their transgression and hostility, just as Allah says, "So for the wrongdoing of those who were Jews, We forbade them good things that had been permitted to them before, and for their averting many from the way of Allah" [Nisa 4:160].As for Allah's saying in Surah Al Imran, "All food was lawful to Banu Israil, except what Israel had forbidden for himself before the Torah was revealed..." [Al Imran 3:93], the reason behind this was that Israel (who is Yaqub ) was suffering from an illness, so he forbade himself certain foods. It is reported from Ibn Abbas that he forbade himself the veins. It is also said that he forbade himself camel meat, so his sons and followers forbade it as well, without Allah having forbidden it to them through revelation or through the words of any of His messengers, and they added to their prohibition whatever they wished, and that was before Allah revealed the Torah. Then when Allah revealed the Torah, He forbade them things that had been lawful but which they had forbidden themselves, so Allah forbade those things to them as a punishment for their transgression. And His saying, "and We are indeed truthful" [Anam 6:146], meaning in this report of Ours about these Jews, while they are lying in their claim that these things were forbidden by Israel upon himself, because the correct view is that Israel forbade himself only some foods, as already mentioned.
