Some men used to provide their families with food in abundance, while others provided food only sparingly. So this verse was revealed, "from the average of what you feed your families, or their clothing" [Maidah 5:89].
كان الرجل يقوت أهله قوتا فيه سعة، وكان الرجل يقوت أهله قوتا فيه شدة. فنزلت: {من أوسط ما تطعمون أهليكم أو كسوتهم}.
Ibn Majah (2113) narrated it from Muhammad bin Yahya, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi told us, who said, Sufyan bin Uyayna told us, from Sulayman bin Abu Mughira, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih, and Busiri also graded it sahih in Zawaid bin Majah.
