This verse was revealed concerning Najashi and his companions. "And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth they have recognized. They say, 'Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses.'" [Maidah 5:83]
نزلت هذه الآية في النجاشي و في أصحابه. {وإذا سمعوا ما أنزل إلى الرسول ترى أعينهم تفيض من الدمع مما عرفوا من الحق يقولون ربنا ءامنا فاكتبنا مع الشهدين}.

Nasai narrated it in his Sunan al-Kubra (11148), Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (4/1185), and Ibn Jareer in his Tafsir (8/602), all of them from the hadith of Umar bin Ali bin Muqaddam, who said, "I heard Hisham bin Urwa narrating from his father, from Abdullah bin Zubayr," and he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Umar bin Ali bin Muqaddam, for his hadith is hasan, though he was accused of concealing his source, but here he stated it explicitly. The reports narrated on this subject strengthen this hadith.Ibn Ishaq said, "I asked Zuhri about the verses, "That is because among them are priests and monks, and because they are not arrogant. And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears" [Maidah 5:82–83].
