the verse, until there was revealed, "And judge between them by what Allah has revealed" [Maidah 5:49].
في قوله تعالى: {سمعون للكذب أكلون للسحت فإن جاءوك فاحكم بينهم أو أعرض عنهم} [سورة المائدة: ٤٢]
الآية حتى نزلت: {وأن احكم بينهم بما أنزل الله}.
Ibn Abu Hatim narrated it in his Tafsir (3/1153), as did Hakim (2/312) and Bayhaqi (8/48), all of them through the hadith of Abbad bin Awwam, from Sufyan bin Husayn, from Hakam, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas, who mentioned it. Hakim said, "Its chain is sahih," and it is as he said.The Prophet ﷺ was commanded to judge between them, after he had earlier been given the choice to turn away from them if he wished. This verse thus abrogated the one that came before it. This is the view of a group of scholars.
