Abu Umama reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to my people to call them to Allah and His Messenger and to present to them the laws of Islam. I came to them, and while we were there, they brought out a bowl of blood and gathered around it to eat from it.They said, "Come, Sudayy, eat with us!"I said, "Woe to you! I have come to you from one who has forbidden this to you, and Allah has revealed this to him."They asked, "What is that?"So I recited to them this verse, "Forbidden to you are dead animals, blood, and the flesh of swine" [Maidah 5:3].

His saying, "Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and the strangled, the beaten, the fallen, the gored, and that which wild beasts have eaten except what you slaughter, and that which is sacrificed on stone altars, and that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. Today those who disbelieve have despaired of your religion, so do not fear them but fear Me. Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin, then indeed Allah is Forgiving and Merciful"
