Regarding the verse "They ask you concerning women. Say, Allah instructs you regarding them, and so does what is recited to you in the Book concerning the orphan women to whom you do not give what is prescribed for them while you desire to marry them" [Nisa 4:127], Ayesha explained, "This refers to a man who has an orphan girl under his care, being her guardian and heir. She shares with him in his wealth, even down to a date palm. He wants to marry her himself but is reluctant to give her in marriage to another man, since that man would then share in his wealth as she shares in it, so he prevents her from marrying. This verse was revealed concerning such a case."
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4600), and Muslim in the tafsir (3018: 7), both through Abu Usama, who said, Hisham bin Urwa narrated to us, from his father, from Ayesha, and he related it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is similar to it.
