Regarding the verse "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you" [Nisa 4:59], he said, "It was revealed concerning Abdullah bin Hudhafah bin Qays bin Adi, when the Prophet ﷺ sent him out on a military expedition."
{أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول وأولي الأمر منكم} قال: نزلت في عبد الله بن حذافة بن قيس بن عدي، إذ بعثه النبي ﷺ في سرية.
Bukhari related it in the tafsir (4584) from Sadaqa bin Fadl, who said, Hajjaj bin Muhammad informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Yaala bin Muslim, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he narrated it.Muslim related it in the Book of Leadership (1834) from Zuhayr bin Harb and Harun bin Abdullah, who both said, Hajjaj bin Muhammad narrated to us, who said, Ibn Jurayj said, "It was revealed, "O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you" [Nisa 4:59] concerning Abdullah bin Hudhafa bin Qays bin Adi Sahmi, whom the Prophet ﷺ sent on a military expedition. Yaala bin Muslim informed me of it, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas."A note. Mizzi mentioned, in the biography of Sunayd bin Dawud Masissi, Abu Ali the market inspector, whose name was Husayn, and "Sunayd" was a nickname that became predominant over him, he said, "Bukhari related, in the tafsir of Surah Nisa (that is, in this very place), from Sadaqa, from Hajjaj bin Muhammad, from Ibn Jurayj, from Yaala bin Muslim, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and mentioned the verse." He said, "This is how the group related it from Firabri, from Bukhari. But Abu Ali Saeed bin Uthman bin Sakan alone related, from Firabri, from Bukhari, who said, 'Sunayd narrated to us, from Hajjaj bin Muhammad,' and he mentioned it."Abu Muhammad bin Yarbu Ishbili said, "The correct view is what the group related, and it is not far-fetched, for this Sunayd is a compiler of tafsir. Ibn Sakan's mention of him in the Tafsir is among the possible errors, because he only mentioned him in the section for which he is known. So it is both plausible and unlikely." End of quote. The summary of the matter is that if he relates in his tafsir a hadith that is marfu, it should be examined, and if he relates from a companion or a successor and there is no denounced or strange element in it, then it is deemed hasan. I mentioned this note because Sunayd's name is frequently mentioned in works of tafsir.
