A man from the Ansar invited us before wine was forbidden. Abdul-Rahman bin Awf stepped forward and led them in the Maghrib prayer, reciting "Say, disbelievers" [Kafirun 109:1], but he became confused in it. So there was revealed, "Do not approach the prayer while you are intoxicated" [Nisa 4:43].
Abu Dawud (3671), Tirmidhi (3026), Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (3/958), and Hakim (4/142) all narrated it through various chains from Sufyan Thawri and Abu Jafar Razi, both of them from Ata bin Saaib, from Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami, from Ali, who related it. The wording given here is Hakim's. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib sahih." Hakim said, "This is a hadith sahih in its chain of transmission, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not narrate it. There is a difference of opinion regarding it concerning Ata bin Saaib, coming through three different routes, this being the first and soundest of them." End of quote. Then, after presenting the other chains from Ata bin Saaib, he said, "All these chains are sahih, but the ruling belongs to the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, for he had a stronger memory than anyone else who narrated it from Ata bin Saaib." End of quote.I say, some narrators said that the imam (leading the prayer) was Ali, while others said, "They put forward so-and-so," leaving it unspecified in this way. The correct view, as Hakim stated, is that the imam was Abdul-Rahman bin Awf. Then the prohibition of wine was revealed.Abu Dawud (3671), Tirmidhi (3026), Ibn Abu Hatim in his Tafsir (3/958), and Hakim (4/142) all narrated it through various chains from Sufyan Thawri and Abu Jafar Razi, both of them from Ata bin Saaib, from Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami, from Ali, who related it.
