I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever grants a debtor in hardship more time has the reward of a charity equal to the debt for each day."Then I heard him say, "Whoever grants a debtor in hardship more time has the reward of a charity equal to twice the debt for each day."I said, "Messenger of Allah, I heard you say, 'Whoever grants a debtor in hardship more time has the reward of a charity equal to the debt for each day,' and then I heard you say, 'Whoever grants a debtor in hardship more time has the reward of a charity equal to twice the debt for each day.'"He replied, "He has the reward of a charity equal to the debt for each day before the debt falls due. Then, once the debt has fallen due and he grants further extension, he has the reward of a charity equal to twice the debt for each day."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من أنظر معسرا فله بكل يوم مثله صدقة قال: ثم سمعته يقول: من أنظر معسرا فله بكل يوم مثليه صدقة قلت: سمعتك يا رسول الله تقول: من أنظر معسرا فله بكل يوم مثله صدقة ثم سمعتك تقول: من أنظر معسرا فله بكل يوم مثليه صدقة فقال له: بكل يوم صدقة قبل أن يحل الدين، فإذا حل الدين فأنظره فله بكل يوم مثليه صدقة.
Ahmad narrated it (23046), and Hakim declared it sahih (2/29), as did Bayhaqi (5/357), all of them from the hadith of Abdul-Warith, who said, Muhammad bin Jahada told us, from Sulayman bin Burayda, from his father, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih, and Hakim declared it sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, but the correct view is that it meets the criteria of Muslim alone, for Bukhari did not narrate from Sulayman bin Burayda.
