The Prophet ﷺ, whenever he had finished a prayer, would turn his face toward us and ask, "Has anyone of you seen a dream tonight?"If anyone had seen a dream, he would relate it, and the Prophet ﷺ would say, "Whatever Allah wills."One day he asked us, "Has any of you seen a dream?"We said, "No."He said, "But I saw one tonight…"He then related his dream, in which he said, "We set out until we came upon a river of blood. In it stood a man in the middle of the river, and before him was another man with stones. The man in the river would come forward, and whenever he tried to get out, the other man would hurl a stone into his mouth and drive him back to where he had been. Every time he came forward to get out, a stone was thrown into his mouth and he was forced back."Jibreel said, "As for the one you saw in the river, those are the consumers of usury."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1386) and Muslim in the Book of Virtues (2275), both from the hadith of Jareer bin Hazim, from Abu Raja Attaradi, from Samura bin Jundab, who related it, and the wording given is Bukhari's. As for Muslim, he did not relate the full text of the dream but was content with his saying, "Did any of you see a dream last night?"And His saying, "Whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists, then what is past is his" [Baqarah 2:275], meaning whoever received Allah's prohibition against consuming riba and desisted from it, then what is past is his, meaning whatever riba he had consumed in the past is among what Allah has pardoned. This is as it comes in the hadith of Amr bin Ahwas, that the Prophet ﷺ said during the Farewell Pilgrimage, "Indeed, every riba from the riba of the pre-Islamic era is abolished, placed beneath these two feet of mine, and the first riba I abolish is the riba of Abbas." This is documented in its proper place. So he did not command the return of what had been taken through riba during the pre-Islamic era.And His saying, "Allah destroys riba" [Baqarah 2:276], meaning He removes its benefit or the blessing of one's wealth, and then comes regret and loss in this world and the next.
