The Prophet ﷺ ordered the payment of zakat al-fitr as one saa of dates. A man brought poor-quality dates, so the Prophet ﷺ said to Abdullah bin Rawaha, "Do not estimate these dates." Then the Quran was revealed, "O you who believe, spend from the good things you have earned and from what We have brought forth for you from the earth, and do not aim toward the bad of it to spend" [Baqarah 2:267].
أمر النبي ﷺ بزكاة الفطر بصاع من تمر، فجاء رجل بتمر رديء، فقال النبي ﷺ لعبد الله بن رواحة: لا تخرص هذا التمر، فنزل القرآن: {يأيها الذين ءامنوا أنفقوا من طيبات ما كسبتم ومما أخرجنا لكم من الأرض ولا تيمموا الخبيث منه تنفقون}.

Reported by Hakim (2/283-284) and Wahidi in Asbab al-Nuzul (p. 81), both from the hadith of Ahmad bin Sahl bin Hamdawayh al-Faqih, who said, "Qays bin Anif told us, Qutayba bin Saeed told us, Hatim bin Ismail told us, from Jafar bin Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir," and he related it.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim."
