He said to Nafi, "People have spoken about you a great deal, claiming that you report from Ibn Umar that he gave a religious ruling permitting women to be approached in their backsides."Nafi replied, "They have lied about me. But let me tell you how the matter actually was. One day Ibn Umar was reciting from the Mushaf while I was with him, until he reached the words of Allah , 'Your women are a tilth for you' [Baqarah 2:223].He said, 'Nafi, do you know the background of this verse?'I said, 'No.'He said, 'We Quraysh used to take our women from behind. When we came to Madinah and married women of the Ansar, we wanted to do with them what we were accustomed to, but they disliked it and considered it a serious matter. The women of the Ansar had adopted the practice of the Jews, who were approached only on their sides. So Allah Most High revealed, "Your women are a tilth for you, so come to your tilth however you wish" [Baqarah 2:223].'"
أنه قال لنافع: إنه قد أكثر عليك القول: إنك تقول عن ابن عمر: إنه أفتى أن تؤتى النساء في أدبارهن، قال نافع: كذبوا علي، و لكني سأخبرك كيف كان الأمر: إن ابن عمر عرض المصحف يوما، وأنا عنده حتى بلغ قوله عز وجل: {نساؤكم حرث لكم} قال: يا نافع، هل تعلم من أمر هذه الآية؟ قال: قلت: لا، قال: إنا كنا معشر قريش نجبي النساء، فلما دخلنا المدينة، ونكحنا نساء الأنصار، أردنا منهن مثل الذي نريد، فإذا هن قد كرهن و أعظمن ذلك، وكانت نساء الأنصار قد أخذن بحال اليهود، إنما يؤتين على جنوبهن، فأنزل الله تعالى: {نساؤكم حرث لكم فأتوا حرثكم أنى شئتم}
Tahawi narrated it in his Mushkil (15/424) from the hadith of Mufaddal bin Fadala, from Abdullah, from Kaab bin Alqama, from Abu Nadr, who said what follows. Nasai narrated it in his Kubra (8929) from the hadith of Mufaddal, except that he said, "Abdullah bin Sulayman narrated to me, from Kaab," with his chain, similarly. Abdullah here is Ibn Ayyash bin Abbas, Abu Hafs, Umari, who is disputed, but he is corroborated by Abdullah bin Sulayman, who is Ibn Zuraa Humayri Taweel, who is also disputed, but each strengthens the other, and the hadith is graded hasan.But Malik holds that the correct view from Ibn Umar is that it is permissible for a man to have intercourse with his wife in her rear. Ibn Jareer narrated in his Tafsir (3/752), via Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, from Malik bin Anas, that it was said to him, "O Abu Abdullah, people narrate from Salim, 'The slave, or the boor, has lied about my father!'" Malik said, "I bear witness regarding Yazid bin Ruman that he told me, from Salim bin Abdullah, from Ibn Umar, the same as what Nafi said." Then it was said to him, "But Harith bin Yaqub narrates from Abu Hubab Saeed bin Yasar that he asked Ibn Umar, saying to him, 'O Abu Abdul-Rahman, we buy slave-girls, so do we give them a bit of souring?' He said, 'What is this souring?' He said, 'The rear.' Ibn Umar said, 'Ugh! Ugh! Would a believer do that?!'" or he said, "a Muslim!" Malik said, "I bear witness regarding Rabia that he told me, from Abu Hubab, from Ibn Umar, the same as what Nafi said."Maymun bin Mihran used to say, when what was related from Nafi about permitting anal intercourse with women was mentioned to him, "Nafi only said that after he had grown old and lost his mind." Tahawi narrated it in his Mushkil (15/426).Tahawi said, "It has also been narrated from Salim that he denied this about Ibn Umar, as Ibn Abu Dawud narrated to us, Ibn Abu Maryam narrated to us, Ataf bin Khalid informed us, from Musa bin Abdullah bin Hasan, that his father asked Salim bin Abdullah to relate to him the hadith of Nafi, from Ibn Umar, that he saw no harm in men having intercourse with women in their rears. Salim said, 'The slave lied,' or he said, 'he erred, he only said there is no harm in approaching them in their genitals from behind.'"Based on these reports, some scholars held that the correct view from Ibn Umar is prohibition, and it may be that he used to hold it permissible before this, based on his own reasoning, but when the prohibition reached him, he reverted to declaring it forbidden.As for what is narrated from Abu Saeed Khudri, that a man had intercourse with a woman in her rear, and the people condemned him for it, so Allah revealed "Your wives are a tilth for you, so approach your tilth however you wish" [Baqarah 2:223], this is daif. Tahawi narrated it in his Mushkil (6118), from Ahmad bin Dawud bin Musa, Yaqub bin Kasib narrated to us, Abdullah bin Nafi narrated to us, from Hisham bin Saad, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abu Saeed Khudri, who mentioned it.Yaqub bin Kasib is Yaqub bin Humayd bin Kasib Madani, sometimes attributed to his grandfather. Ibn Main, Abu Hatim, Nasai, and others declared him daif. The corroboration of Harith bin Siraj does not help, for he is extremely daif, indeed some scholars accused him of lying. Abu Yaala (1103) narrated from his route, with his chain, from Abu Saeed, who said, "A man abara his wife during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so they said, 'So-and-so did abara to his wife,'" so Allah revealed "Your wives are a tilth for you, so approach your tilth however you wish" [Baqarah 2:223].His statement, "A man abara his wife," means he approached the place from which dung exits from the intestines, which is the rear.
