Jundab bin Abdullah reported,

The Prophet ﷺ once sent out a small party and placed Abu Ubayda bin Jarrah, or Ubayda, in charge of them. But when the time came to set out, the man wept out of longing for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and stayed behind. So the Prophet ﷺ appointed Abdullah bin Jahsh over them in his place and wrote him a letter, instructing him not to read it until he reached a certain place. He also told him, "Do not compel any of your companions to travel with you."When Abdullah bin Jahsh read the letter, he said, "We belong to Allah and to Him we return." Then he said, "I hear and obey Allah and His Messenger." He informed the men of what the letter contained and read it out to them. Two of them turned back, and the rest continued on. They encountered Ibn Hadrami and killed him, not knowing whether that day fell in Rajab or in Jumada.The idolaters then said to the Muslims, "You have killed during the sacred month." So Allah عز وجل revealed, "They ask you about the sacred month, about fighting in it" [Baqarah 2:217], and the rest of the verse.Some of them then said, "Even if they have incurred no sin, they still earn no reward." So Allah عز وجل revealed, "Indeed, those who have believed and those who have emigrated and striven in the way of Allah, it is they who hope for the mercy of Allah, and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful" [Baqarah 2:218].

عن جندب بن عبد الله

عن النبي ﷺ أنه بعث رهطا، وبعث عليهم أبا عبيدة بن الجراح أو عبيدة، فلما ذهب لينطلق بكي صبابة إلى رسول الله ﷺ فجلس، فبعث عليهم عبد الله بن جحش مكانه، وكتب له كتابا، وأمره أن لا يقرأ الكتاب حتى يبلغ مكان كذا وكذا، وقال: لا تكرهن أحدا من أصحابك على المسير معك. فلما قرأ الكتاب استرجع، ثم قال: سمع وطاعة لله ولرسوله، فخبرهم الخبر، وقرأ عليهم الكتاب، فرجع رجلان، ومضى بقيتهم، فلقوا ابن الحضرمي، فقتلوه، ولم يدروا أن ذلك اليوم من رجب أو جمادي، فقال المشركون للمسلمين: قتلتم في الشهر الحرام، فأنزل الله عز وجل: {يسألونك عن الشهر الحرام قتال فيه} الآية، فقال بعضهم: إن لم يكونوا أصابوا وزرا، فليس لهم أجر، فأنزل الله عز وجل: {إن الذين ءامنوا والذين هاجروا وجهدوا في سبيل الله أولئك يرجون رحمت الله والله غفور رحيم}

His saying, "They ask you about the sacred month, about fighting therein. Say, Fighting therein is great sin, but averting people from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and preventing access to Masjid al-Haram and expelling its people therefrom are greater evil in the sight of Allah. And fitnah is greater than killing. And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able. And whoever of you reverts from his religion and dies while he is a disbeliever, for those their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein eternally. Indeed, those who have believed and those who have emigrated and strived in the way of Allah, those expect the mercy of Allah. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful"
