In the days of pre-Islamic ignorance, people would perform the circumambulation around the Kaaba while naked, except for the Hums. The Hums were Quraysh and those born to them. The Hums considered it a religious duty to provide clothing for others. A man would give another man garments to perform tawaf in, and a woman would give another woman garments to perform tawaf in. Whoever the Hums did not provide for would circumambulate the House naked. The general body of people would depart from Arafat, while the Hums would depart from Muzdalifah.Hisham said, My father informed me, on the authority of Ayesha, that this verse was revealed concerning the Hums, "Then depart from where the people depart" [Baqarah 2:199]. He said, They used to depart from Muzdalifah, so they were directed to go to Arafat instead.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1665), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1219:152), both from the hadith of Hisham bin Urwa, from Urwa, who mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's.
