The Prophet ﷺ came to visit me when I was ill in Mecca, and he disliked the thought of someone dying in the land from which he had emigrated. He said, "May Allah have mercy on Ibn Afra."I asked, "Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth?"He replied, "No."I asked, "Then half?"He replied, "No."I asked, "A third?"He said, "A third, and a third is much. To leave your heirs wealthy is better than to leave them destitute, begging from people. Whatever you spend will be counted as charity, even the morsel you raise to your wife's mouth. And perhaps Allah will raise you up so that some people will benefit through you and others will be harmed by you."At that time, he had only one daughter.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Wills (2742) and Muslim in the Book of Wills (1628), both from the route of Sufyan, from Saad bin Ibrahim, from Amir bin Saad, from Saad bin Abu Waqqas, who said, then he mentioned it. The wording is Bukhari's, and Muslim did not present his own wording but instead referred back to the wording of the hadith before it.
