Abu Hurayrah reported that the People of the Book used to recite the Torah in Hebrew and explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not believe the People of the Book, nor disbelieve them. Rather, say, 'We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us'" [Baqarah 2:136].
كان أهل الكتاب يقرؤون التوراة بالعبرانية ويفسرونها بالعربية لأهل الإسلام، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: لا تصدقوا أهل الكتاب ولا تكذبوهم وقولوا {آمنا بالله وما أنزل إلينا}
Bukhari related it in the tafsir (4485) from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Uthman bin Umar told us, Ali bin Mubarak informed us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. That is, they used to give an interpretation that was mistaken and contrary to reality.
