I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Trials are presented to hearts like a reed mat woven stick by stick. Any heart that absorbs them has a black mark placed upon it, and any heart that rejects them has a white mark placed upon it, until hearts become of two kinds. One is white like a smooth stone, and no trial will harm it as long as the heavens and the earth remain. The other is black and dust-colored, like an overturned vessel, recognizing no good and rejecting no evil, except what its desires have absorbed."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: تعرض الفتن على القلوب كالحصير عودا عودا، فأي قلب أشربها نكت فيه نكتة سوداء، وأي قلب أنكرها نكت فيه نكتة بيضاء، حتى تصير على قلبين، على أبيض مثل الصفا، فلا تضره فتنة ما دامت السماوات والأرض، والآخر أسود مربادا كالكوز مجخيا لا يعرف معروفا ولا ينكر منكرا، إلا ما أشرب من هواه.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on Faith (144), from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr, who said, Abu Khalid, that is, Sulayman bin Hayan, told us, from Saad bin Tariq, from Rubai, from Huzaifa, who said, then he mentioned it.
