The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge, and seek refuge in Allah from knowledge that brings no benefit."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: سلوا الله علما نافعا، وتعوذوا بالله من علم لا ينفع.
Ibn Majah (3843) narrated it from Ali bin Muhammad, who said, "Waki narrated to us, from Usama, and Usama bin Zayd, from Muhammad bin Munkadir, from Jabir," and then he related the hadith. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Usama bin Zayd, for he is truthful.Busiri said, "This is a sahih chain of transmission, its narrators are trustworthy, and Usama bin Zayd is al-Laythi al-Madani, whom Muslim relied upon as evidence." End of quote. But the correct view is that Muslim only narrated from him among corroborating reports, specifically from the report of Ibn Wahb from him alone, and this is a sound recension, as Ibn Adi said.Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (82), narrating it through another route from Usama, with his chain of transmission, with the wording, "O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit." Haythami graded its chain of transmission hasan after attributing it to Tabarani.Tabarani narrated it (Majma Bahrayn, 174) through another route from Muhammad bin Munkadir, from Jabir, that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge and accepted deeds."He narrated it from Ahmad (that is, Ibn Muhammad bin Sadaqah), who said, "Husayn bin Ali bin Jafar Ahmar narrated to us," who said, "my father narrated to me," from Ishaq bin Mansur Saluli, from Jafar Ahmar, from Muhammad bin Suqa, from Muhammad bin Munkadir, with the same wording.Tabarani said, "No one narrated it from Ibn Suqa except Jafar, and no one narrated it from him except Ishaq, and Husayn narrated it exclusively from his father." End of quote.
