The Prophet ﷺ said, "Fast three days each month."The man replied, "I am able to do more than that."He kept asking for more until the Prophet ﷺ said, "Fast one day and break your fast the next."Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite the Quran once every month."The man replied, "I am able to do more."He kept asking for more until the Prophet ﷺ said, "Recite it in three days."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Fasting (1978), from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Ghundar told us, Shubah told us, from Mughira, who said, I heard Mujahid narrate from Abdullah bin Amr, and he mentioned it.His statement, "in seven," and then "in three," should be understood as referring to two different occasions, and the matter was then finally settled at three, because whoever recites the Quran in less than three days does not truly comprehend it, as stated in the hadith that follows.
