Abdullah, who is Ibn Masud, said, "I know the paired surahs that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite, two by two in each rakah."Abdullah then got up, and Alqama went in with him. When Alqama came out, we asked him about it, and he said, "They are twenty surahs from the beginning of the Mufassal section according to the arrangement of Ibn Masud's codex, the last of them being the Ha-Mim surahs, Ha-Mim ad-Dukhan and Amma Yatasaaloon."
Bukhari narrated it in the chapters on the virtues of the Quran (4996), from Abdan, from Abu Hamza, from Amash, from Shaqiq, and he related it. Muslim also narrated it in the chapters on the prayer of the traveler (822:276) through another route, in similar wording. Likewise, Ali bin Abu Talib had a copy, Ubayy bin Kaab had a copy, Abdullah bin Abbas had a copy, Abu Musa Ashari had a copy, Miqdad bin Aswad had a copy, Salim the freed slave of Abu Huzaifa had a copy, and others as well.In these copies there is a difference in the ordering of the surahs, which indicates that they wrote these copies according to whatever was convenient for them, and it was not their purpose to gather the entire Quran into a single copy, as Abu Bakr did when he ordered Zayd bin Thabit to gather the Quran.
