The Prophet ﷺ passed away, and no one had compiled the entire Quran except four men, Abu Darda, Muaz bin Jabal, Zayd bin Thabit, and Abu Zayd. He said, "And we are the ones who inherited it from him."
مات النبي ﷺ ولم يجمع القرآن غير أربعة: أبو الدرداء، ومعاذ بن جبل، وزيد بن ثابت، وأبو زيد، قال: ونحن ورثناه.
Bukhari related it in the Virtues of the Quran (5004) from Mualla bin Assad, who said, Abdullah bin Muthanna narrated to us, who said, Thabit Bunani and Thumama narrated to me, from Anas, and he mentioned it.Anas's statement, "No one compiled the Quran except four," and then he added Abu Darda to it, making them five, means that no one compiled the entire Quran, or most of the Quran, except these individuals. Otherwise, the number of those who wrote down the Quran in scattered portions was large, and these people then dispersed throughout the Islamic lands, so it is not possible to limit those who wrote it down to just five.Ibn Hazm mentioned in Jawami al-Sirah (pp. 26-27) among the scribes of the Prophet ﷺ, Ali bin Abu Talib, Uthman, Umar, Abu Bakr, Khalid bin Saeed bin Aas, Ubayy bin Kaab the Ansari, Hanzala bin Rabi Asidi, Yazid bin Abu Sufyan, Zayd bin Thabit the Ansari from Banu Najjar, and Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan. Zayd bin Thabit was among the most dedicated of people to that task, and after the conquest, Muawiya followed him, so the two of them were constantly engaged in writing before him ﷺ for revelation and other matters, having no other occupation besides that.
