I heard a man recite a verse, but I had heard the Prophet ﷺ recite it differently. So I brought him to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. I noticed displeasure on his face, and he said, "Both of you are doing well. Do not differ, for those before you differed and were destroyed."
سمعت رجلا قرأ آية، سمعت النبي ﷺ يقرأ خلافها، فجئت به النبي ﷺ فأخبرته، فعرفت في وجهه الكراهية، وقال: كلاكما محسن، ولا تختلفوا، فإن من كان قبلكم اختلفوا فهلكوا.
Bukhari narrated it in Anbiya (3476), in Khusumat (2410), and in Fadail Quran (5062), through various routes from Shuba, who said, Abdul-Malik bin Maysara narrated to us, saying, I heard Nazal bin Sabra Hilali, from Ibn Masud, and he related it.This man is said to be Ubayy bin Kaab, and the disagreement was over the manner of recitation. In such a case, each of them continues with his own recitation and differs with his companion without disputing with him.
