The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are four practices from the days of ignorance that remain in my nation, which the people will never abandon. Wailing over the dead, attacking people's lineages, belief in contagion (one camel becomes mangy and a hundred camels then become mangy, but who gave the first camel its mange?), and attributing rain to the stars (saying, 'We were given rain by such and such a star')."
Tirmidhi (1001) narrated it from Mahmud bin Ghaylan, who said, Abu Dawud told us, Shubah and Masudi informed us, from Alqama bin Marthad, from Abu Rabi, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Tirmidhi said, This is a hasan hadith.I say, It is as he said, for Abu Rabi is hasan in hadith. Abu Hatim said of him, "Sound in hadith." As for Masudi, although his memory became mixed up, Shubah corroborated him. Ahmad (9872) also narrated it through Shubah and Hajjaj, both of them from Alqama bin Marthad, in a similar wording. The discussion of this is given in full detail in the Book of Funerals.
