When the helmet was struck and broken upon the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his face was bloodied and his front tooth was broken. Ali kept bringing water in his shield, and Fatimah came to wash the blood from his face. When Fatimah saw that the blood was only increasing despite the water, she took a piece of straw mat and burned it, then pressed it against the wound of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the bleeding stopped. In another narration, she took a piece of mat and burned it until it became ashes, then pressed it onto the wound, and the bleeding was stanched.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Medicine (5722), and Muslim in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (1790:102), both through the route of Yaqub bin Abdul-Rahman Qari, from Abu Hazim, that he heard Sahl bin Saad, and he mentioned it. The other narration of Muslim (1790:101) is through the route of Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim, from his father, that he heard Sahl bin Saad, with the same content.
