The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to apply ithmid kohl to his eyes, three strokes to the right eye and two to the left.
كان رسول الله ﷺ يكتحل بالإثمد، ويكتحل اليمنى ثلاث قراود، واليسرى قرودين.
Ibn Abu Shayba (23953) narrated it from Isa bin Yunus, from Abdul-Hameed bin Jafar, from Imran bin Abu Anas, and he mentioned it. This is mursal. Abu Shaykh connected it in Akhlaq al-Nabi ﷺ (p. 147) through another route, from Abdul-Hameed bin Jafar, from Imran bin Abu Anas, from Anas, who mentioned the same. Except that he made it three for each eye, while the correct version is what is in the Musannaf. Its chain is hasan, because of Abdul-Hameed bin Jafar al-Ansari, whom some scholars have criticized, but Ibn Main deemed him trustworthy. Abu Hatim said, "His standing is one of truthfulness," so someone like him has his hadith graded hasan as long as he does not contradict an established ruling and does not report something that would be rejected of him.
