A woman's husband had died, and her eye began to ache. The people mentioned her condition to the Prophet ﷺ and spoke to him about applying kohl, saying that they feared for her eyesight.He said, "One of you used to remain in her house wearing her worst garments, or in her worst house wearing her garments, and when a dog passed by she would throw a piece of dung. Can she not wait four months and ten days?"
أن امرأة توفي زوجها فاشتكت عينها فذكروها للنبي ﷺ، وذكروا له الكحل، وأنه يخاف على عينها فقال: لقد كانت إحداكن تمكث في بيتها في شر أحلاسها-أو في أحلاسها شر بيتها- فإذا مر كلب رمت بعرة فهلا أربعة أشهر وعشرا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Medicine (5706), and Muslim in the Book of Divorce (1488:60), both through the route of Shuba, who said, Humayd bin Nafi narrated to me, I heard Zaynab bint Umm Salama narrating from her mother, and he mentioned it.
