Ahmad (23207) narrated it from Hasan (that is, Ibn Musa), Zuhayr told us, from Abu Zubayr, from Amr bin Shuayb, from his father, from one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan on account of Amr bin Shuayb, for his hadith is hasan.As for what Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Saad bin Zurara Ansari narrated, he said, I heard my uncle Yahya, and I never met a man among us more resembling him, telling people that Saad bin Zurara, who was Muhammad's maternal grandfather, was struck by a pain in his throat called "the dhabha," and the Prophet ﷺ said, "I will surely reach or surely exhaust an excuse regarding Abu Umama," so he cauterized him with his own hand and he died. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "What a bad death for the Jews to seize upon, they will say, could he not ward it off from his companion? Yet I possess nothing for him, nor for myself." This is daif.Ibn Majah (3492) narrated it, as did Hakim (4/214–215) and Abu Naeem Asbahani in Tibb Nabawi (353), all of them through the hadith of Shuba, who said, Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Saad bin Zurara told us, and he mentioned it. The wording given is that of Ibn Majah, while Hakim's wording is abridged, and he said, "Sahih according to the standard of the two shaykhs, though they did not report it." I say, it is not according to the standard of the two shaykhs, for the uncle of Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman, namely Yahya, is disputed. Is he the son of Asaad bin Zurara, or is he attributed to his grandfather or to his father's grandfather? Some said he is Yahya bin Asaad bin Zurara, which would make him a companion for certain, since Asaad bin Saad died in the first year of the hijra, at the time the Prophet ﷺ was building his mosque. Others said he is Yahya bin Saad bin Zurara. Others said he is Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Asaad bin Zurara. And others said he is Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Saad bin Zurara.After examining the statements of the scholars, it becomes clear from the statement of Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Saad bin Zurara, the uncle of Yahya, that he is Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Saad bin Zurara, and so he is not a companion. His full name has come explicitly in Tabari's history (9/2), where he said, from Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Asaad bin Zurara, that the Messenger of Allah said, "What a bad death Abu Umama has died, as far as the Jews and the hypocrites of the Arabs are concerned, they will say, if he were truly a prophet his companion would not have died. Yet I possess nothing for myself nor for my companion against Allah."His hadith is mursal, because he did not witness the story of his grandfather with the Prophet ﷺ.As for his saying "the dhabha," with a dammah on the dhal and a fatha on the ba, like a hamza in form, it is a pain in the throat which, when it intensifies, cuts off the breath and kills the patient.
