The Prophet ﷺ addressed them and said, "May Allah grant prosperity to a man who hears something from us and retains it, for many a bearer of knowledge has no real understanding of it, and many a bearer of knowledge carries it to one who understands it better than he does."
أن النبي ﷺ خطبهم فقال: نصر الله امرءا سمع منا مقالة فوعاها، فرب حامل فقه لا فقه له، ورب حامل فقه إلى من هو أفقه منه.
Tabarani related it in al-Kabir (17/49), Muhammad bin Nasr al-Qattan al-Hamdani told us, Hisham bin Ammar told us, Shihab bin Kharash told us, from Awwam bin Hawshab, from Mujahid, from Ubayd bin Umayr, from his father, and he mentioned the hadith.Tabarani said, "It is not narrated from Umayr bin Qatada al-Laythi except by this chain, Hisham narrated it alone."Haythami said in al-Majma (1/137–138), "Tabarani related it in al-Kabir, and its narrators are deemed reliable, except that I have not seen anyone mention Muhammad bin Nasr, the teacher of Tabarani, in al-Awsat."I say, it is as he said, except that there is some criticism of Hisham bin Ammar which does not harm his standing, and his hadith is hasan.This hadith has been related from more than one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and there is criticism regarding their chains, but the one I have mentioned is the most sahih of them. Scholars have counted this hadith among the mutawatir hadiths, both in wording and meaning.
