The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill, so I placed my hand on his chest and said, "Remove the affliction, Lord of mankind. You are the Physician, and You are the Healer."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying, "Join me with the highest company, join me with the highest company."
مرض رسول الله ﷺ فوضعت يدي على صدره، فقلت: أذهب البأس رب الناس، أنت الطبيب، وأنت الشافي، وكان رسول الله ﷺ، يقول: ألحقني بالرفيق الأعلى، وألحقني بالرفيق الأعلى.
Ahmad narrated it (24774), and Nasai in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (1015), and Bayhaqi in Al-Asma wal-Sifat (151), all of them from the hadith of Nafi bin Umar Jumahi, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, from Ayesha, and she related it. Its isnad is sahih.His saying, "You are gentle," means you are gentle with the sick and afflicted, because gentleness is inherent to the nature of a physician, and it is only for this reason that the physician is called what he is called.As for his saying, "Its physician is the One who created it," and her saying, "You are the Physician," this means the true Physician who knows the reality of the disease and the cure, and who has the power over health and healing, and this is specific to Allah.As for applying the term "physician" to a human being because he treats the sick, whether the sick person is cured through him or not, there is no objection to that, and it has been reported, "Call the physician of the tribe of so-and-so," in the hadith that follows.
