The Prophet ﷺ was asked about nushrah, and he said, "It is from the work of Satan."
سئل النبي ﷺ عن النشرة فقال: من عمل الشيطان
Abu Dawud narrated it (3868) from Ahmad bin Hanbal, and it is in his Musnad (14135), he said, Abdul-Razzaq narrated to us, Aqeel bin Maqil informed us, I heard Wahb bin Munabbi narrating from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Aqeel bin Maqil, for his hadith are hasan, and Ibn Hajar also graded it hasan in Fath al-Bari (233/10).The practice of undoing sorcery through charms was a type of pre-Islamic incantation that included words of shirk, which they used to treat someone who had been bewitched. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about this incantation practiced in pre-Islamic times, and he said, "It is from the work of Satan." Islam replaced this incantation involving shirk with the legitimate ruqya that includes the remembrance of Allah Almighty, His names and attributes, seeking refuge in Him, and turning to Him for protection on various occasions. This is a matter on which there is no disagreement. As for undoing sorcery with sorcery, or by using jinn and devils, or by going to fortune-tellers and sorcerers, all of this is forbidden. Hafiz bin Qayyim said, "Undoing sorcery with sorcery like it is from the work of Satan."As for undoing sorcery from the one who is bewitched, there are ways to do it. One of them is supplicating to Allah to show him the location of the sorcery, so that he sees it in a dream. Another is to recite over the bewitched person, so that the jinn speaks through the tongue of the afflicted person, and from this the location where the sorcery was placed becomes known. His Eminence Shaykh bin Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned ways to discover the location of sorcery. He said, may Allah have mercy on him,As for treating sorcery after it has occurred, one of the most beneficial treatments is exerting effort to find the location of the sorcery, whether in the ground, a mountain, or elsewhere. If it is found, extracted, and destroyed, the sorcery is nullified, as mentioned in the hadith of Ayesha. Another treatment is repelling it with Quranic verses, remembrances, and supplications, for these are among the greatest weapons for removing sorcery after it has occurred, along with abundant pleading to Allah and asking Him
to remove the harm and lift the affliction.Another treatment for sorcery after it has occurred, which is beneficial for a man who has been prevented from having intercourse with his wife, is to take seven leaves of green sidr, crush them with a stone or something similar, place them in a container, pour over them enough water for washing, and recite over it the Verse of the Throne and "Say, O disbelievers" [Kafirun 109:1] and "Say, He is Allah, One" [Ikhlas 112:1] and "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak" [Falaq 113:1] and "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind" [Nas 114:1], along with the verses about sorcery in Surah Araf, which are His saying, Almighty, "And We inspired to Musa, 'Throw your staff,' and it swallowed up what they were falsifying. So the truth was established, and what they were doing was proven false. So they were defeated there and turned back, disgraced." [Araf 7:117–119], and the verses in Surah Yunus, which are His saying, Almighty, "And Pharaoh said, 'Bring me every learned sorcerer.' And when the sorcerers came, Musa said to them, 'Throw down whatever you are going to throw.' So when they had thrown, Musa said, 'What you have brought is sorcery. Allah will surely nullify it. Indeed, Allah does not allow the work of corrupters to prosper. And Allah will establish the truth by His words, however much the criminals dislike it.'" [Yunus 10:79–82], and the verses in Surah Taha, "They said, 'O Musa, either you throw, or we will be the first to throw.' He said, 'Rather, you throw.' And suddenly their ropes and staffs appeared to him, from their magic, as if they were moving swiftly. So Musa felt a fear within himself. We said, 'Do not fear, indeed you are superior. And throw what is in your right hand, it will swallow up what they have made. What they have made is only the trick of a sorcerer, and the sorcerer does not succeed wherever he goes.'" [Taha 20:65–69].After reciting what has been mentioned over the water, he drinks three sips of it and washes with the rest, and by this the affliction will go away, Allah willing. If there is a need to use it twice or more, there is no harm in that, until the affliction goes away.As for treating it through the practice of sorcerers, which is drawing near to the jinn through slaughtering an offering or other such acts of devotion, this is not permissible, because it is from the work of Satan, indeed from major shirk. It is obligatory to be cautious of that. Likewise, it is not permissible to treat it by consulting fortune-tellers, diviners, and sorcerers, or by using what they say, because they do not believe, and because they are lying sinners who claim knowledge of the unseen and deceive people. The Messenger ﷺ warned against going to them, consulting them, and believing them.Ways to protect against sorcery. First, reciting the Verse of the Throne after every obligatory prayer, following the prescribed remembrances after the closing salutation. Second, reciting it before sleeping. The Verse of the Throne is the greatest verse in the noble Quran, and it is His saying, Almighty,"Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great." [Baqarah 2:255]Third, this includes reciting "Say, He is Allah, One" [Ikhlas 112:1] and "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak" [Falaq 113:1] and "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind" [Nas 114:1] after every obligatory prayer, and reciting these three surahs three times at the beginning of the day after the Fajr prayer, at the beginning of the night after the Maghrib prayer, and before sleeping.Fourth, this includes reciting the two verses at the end of Surah Baqarah at the beginning of the night, which are His saying, Almighty, "The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them believe in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers. They say, 'We do not differentiate between any of His messengers.' And they say, 'We hear and we obey. Our forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the destination.' Allah does not charge a soul except with what it can bear. It will have what it has earned, and it will bear what it has earned. Our Lord, do not hold us accountable if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no strength to bear, and pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." [Baqarah 2:285–286].It has been established as sahih from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said, "Whoever recites the Verse of the Throne during a night will have a protector from Allah remaining with him, and no devil will come near him until morning." And it has also been established as sahih from him ﷺ that he said, "Whoever recites the two verses at the end of Surah Baqarah during a night, they will suffice him." The meaning, and Allah knows best, is that they will protect him from every evil.Fifth, this includes frequently seeking refuge with the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created, by day and by night, and whenever stopping at any place, whether in a building, the desert, the open air, or the sea, because of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, "Whoever stops at a place and says, 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,' nothing will harm him until he departs from that place."Sixth, this includes the Muslim saying, at the beginning of the day and the beginning of the night, three times, "In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing," because of the sahih encouragement to do so reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and because this is a cause of safety from every evil. These remembrances and formulas of seeking refuge are among the greatest means of guarding against the evil of sorcery and other evils, for whoever maintains them with sincerity, faith, trust in Allah, reliance upon Him, and an open heart toward what they indicate.
