Uthman complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a pain he had been feeling in his body ever since he embraced Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Place your hand on the part of your body that hurts, say 'In the name of Allah' three times, then say seven times, 'I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I find and fear.'"In another wording, Uthman reported that he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I have a pain that has nearly destroyed me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wipe it with your right hand seven times and say, 'I seek refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I find.'"Uthman said, "So I said that, and Allah removed what I was suffering from. I have continued to instruct my family and others to use it ever since."
أنه شكا إلى رسول الله ﷺ وجعا، يجده في جسده منذ أسلم، فقال له رسول الله ﷺ: ضع يدك على الذي تألم من جسدك، وقل باسم الله ثلاثا، وقل سبع مرات أعوذ بالله وقدرته من شر ما أجد وأحاذر وفي لفظ عنه: أنه أتى رسول الله ﷺ قال عثمان: وبي وجع قد كان يهلكني، قال: فقال رسول الله ﷺ: امسحه بيمينك سبع مرات. وقل أعوذ بعزة الله وقدرته من شر ما أجد. قال: فقلت ذلك. فأذهب الله ما كان بي. فلم أزل آمر بها أهلي وغيرهم.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Greetings (2202) through the route of Ibn Wahb, Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, Nafi bin Jubayr bin Mutim informed me, from Uthman bin Abu As, and he mentioned it with the first wording.Malik narrated it in the Book of the Evil Eye (9) from Yazid bin Khusayfa, that Amr bin Abdullah bin Kaab Sulami informed him that Nafi bin Jubayr informed him, from Uthman bin Abu As, and he mentioned it with the second wording. Through the route of Malik, it was narrated by Abu Dawud (3891), Tirmidhi (2080), and Ahmad in his Musnad (16268).Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (2965), as did Hakim (1/343). Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." Hakim said, "This is a hadith with a sahih chain of transmission."It was also narrated from Amr bin Kaab bin Malik, from his father, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When any of you feels pain, let him place his hand where he feels the pain, then let him say seven times, 'I seek refuge in the might and power of Allah over all things, from the evil of what I feel.'"Ahmad narrated it (27179), but it contains Abu Mashar, who is Najeeh bin Abdul-Rahman Sindi, and he is daif. He also erred in it by attributing it to the Musnad of Kaab bin Malik.
