Aishah reported that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill, he would recite the Muawwidhat over himself and blow gently. She said, "When his pain grew severe, I was the one who would recite over him and wipe him with his own right hand, hoping for its blessing."
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان إذا اشتكى يقرأ على نفسه بالمعوذات وينفث قالت: فلما اشتد وجعه كنت أنا أقرأ عليه وأمسح عليه بيمينه رجاء بركتها.
Malik related it in al-Ayn (10) from Ibn Shihab, from Urwa bin Zubayr, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it. Bukhari related it in the Virtues of the Quran (5016), and Muslim in Salam (2192: 51), through the route of Malik, with the same wording. Bukhari also related it in Medicine (5735) through the route of Maamar, from Zuhri, with the same wording, adding at the end, "So I asked Zuhri, how did he blow?" He said, "He would blow onto his hands, then wipe his face with them."Ibn Majah related it (3528) from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba (24030), Ali bin Maymun Raqqi, and Sahl bin Abu Sahl, who said, Waki narrated to us, from Malik bin Anas, from Zuhri, from Urwa, from Ayesha, who said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to blow during the ruqya."Daraqutni said in al-Ilal (3480), "Waki was not corroborated on this wording. The sahih version from Zuhri, from Urwa, from Ayesha, is that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite the protective surahs over himself and blow." He said, "That is how it appears in Muwatta."
